Normal service resumes for teams in the Club this weekend after the recent break for the Six Nations finale.

The 1st XV will play their final home WRU National Championship game of the season as they welcome Glynneath to Mount Pleasant Park.

The visitors are still not safe from the drop but are seven points above the relegation zone with three games to play. They have won eight of their nineteen games this season with victories coming against Cardiff Met (20-14 & 25-10), Bedlinog (18-12), Dunvant (21-13 & 37-13), Glamorgan Wanderers (16-12), Newcastle Emlyn (36-10) and Beddau (27-21).

The win over Beddau was back in November in West Wales when Tom Shepperd and Glen Slater got the Green and Golds tries with Callum Wheeler kicking three penalties and a conversion. Glynneath proved to be a battling and very dogged side that day and similar is expected this Saturday as Beddau look to climb to third place having drawn level with Tata Steel on points despite the disappointing loss at Newbridge a fortnight ago.

The players, coaches and support staff will all be looking to give their supporters a good end of season send off and thank them for their support in what has been another good season.

The 2nd XV return to Rhondda & East Glamorgan DRU League action this week and face probably the toughest test of the season away to league leaders and last season’s Champion Club Bargoed.

The Rhymney Valley Club currently lead the table by a point from their local rivals Penallta and still have a game in hand. They have won six of their seven games this season with the one loss coming at Dowlais back in November. They have put on some excellent displays with the victories coming against Aberdare (27-0 & 73-0), Senghenydd (45-0), Penallta (20-14), Mountain Ash (70-24) and Beddau (58-19) on the opening day of the season.

Beddau have begun the process of giving their last year youth team players senior rugby experience and they will certainly benefit from featuring against the quality opponents that Bargoed are. The young Green and Golds will also be hoping to bounce back from their loss at Penallta two weeks ago and look to move up the table from fourth spot.

Kick-off is also 2.30pm.

MINI & JUNIOR RUGBY

Our mini and junior “Bulldogs” continue their successful season on Sunday. They will again appreciate any support on the various playing fields around the village. They continue to impress with their performances on the field and behaviour off the field.

DARTS

Our Friday nights darts team are now just a point off the top of the Pontyclun & District Winter league table with a game in hand after an excellent 6-1 win away at the Mounters last weekend. But they face a huge fixture this Friday at home to a Coed Ely outfit who are the only side to beat “Lenny’s Lions” during this seasons Winter league campaign. The visitors are third in the table and still have title aspirations after winning seventeen of their twenty games. They beat Beddau 4-3 (9-8 legs) in the Rhondda back in December so the ingredients are all there for what should be a cracker of a tie.

It all starts at 8.15pm and support will be more than welcome.

FOOTBALL

Cwm Welfare continue their quest for Welsh league football safety this weekend as they welcome Chepstow Town to Mount Pleasant (2.30pm).

Cwm have dragged themselves out of the relegation spots in recent weeks and their fighting spirit was clearly on show last Saturday when a 92nd minute goal from Gareth Lloyd earned them a huge draw at fellow relegation haunted Club Trefelin.

Cwm can move up a place in the table to twelfth if they can overcome a good Chepstow outfit who occupy sixth place in the table having won eleven and drawn one of their twenty one games this season.

Of the nine games that they have lost, one of them was at home to an outstanding Cwm back in November who took the points with a 3-1 final score line.

ENTERTAINMENT

There is another weekend of top quality live sport to be seen at the Clubhouse on the big screens and many large TV’s. There is the big International football fixture between Wales and the Republic of Ireland on Friday plus all the big Aviva and Guinness rugby all over the weekend.

Once again there is free entertainment in the bar from 5.30pm on Sunday. Always a fun filled after of entertainment.
