Tough Mid District Derby Awaits Green and Golds

Beddau will play host to old Mid District rivals Ystrad Rhondda at Mount Pleasant Park tomorrow in the WRU National Championship - weather permitting.

The visitors have enjoyed a superb start to life in the Championship after gaining promotion last season by winning the Division One East Central title then defeating a very good Brynmawr outfit in the two legged play-off.

They have enjoyed excellent home wins over Tata Steel (48-28), Newcastle Emlyn (45-9) and Trebanos (34-27) and won a tough game away at Maesteg Quins (18-11). Just like Beddau their colours were lowered by Cardiff Met (38-0) and Champions Pontypool (29-18) who they gave a big fright to during the opening half of the game.

Former Beddau outside half Rhys Truelove has been in impressive form for the Rhondda Club this season and Jay Harris, son of former Beddau centre Dai, who appeared a few times in Green and Gold are both expected to line up in a good traveling squad.

The game is massive for both teams. Ystrad currently have a thirteen point cushion over Beddau in the league and could perhaps pull away from the bottom group with a victory whilst Beddau will be desperate for some points to move out of the bottom three.

The same mistakes keep hampering Beddau but they know that it is only a matter of time before their performances get the results that they deserve.

The teams last met in the Mid District Cup semi-final at Penygraig back in April 2016, when two penalties from Hywel Chatham and two also from Sam Withers gave the Green and Golds a tight 12-6 victory.

The last league fixture between the sides at Mount Pleasant Park was back in September 2014, when Beddau started their season with an impressive 36-19 win over their Rhondda guests. Lee Jarvis and his coaching team would love to see a similar result this week but know this game will be so much tighter.
