Wheeler Try Brace Sees Off Stubborn Crows

At the fifth time of asking Beddau have an entry in the W column.

It was never easy. Nobody thought that it would be.

Some of the difficulties facing Clubs these days was manifest in the fact that Trebanos were unable to name their starting XV prior to arriving at the ground while, for their part, Beddau`s young centre Kieran Gay has to juggle work commitments. Happily, this was a rugby day.

The game had barely passed its opening minute when Kieran Gay was striding through a gap and his pass was just held by Callum Wheeler who completed the score. Hywel Chatham converted and it was 7-0. There was no time to bask in the glory as Rhys Owens was left on the floor after a lineout and eventually helped off with a knee injury. This introduced summer recruit Dan Watkins, a back-rower, to make his club debut in the boiler.

Trebanos had, by now, grabbed the initiative with counter attacking full-back Josh Ferriman prepared to vary his angle of running and finding willing partners throughout a lively back division. At a breakdown Beddau`s overeager tacklers kept the ball carrier pinned to the ground and Matthew Edwards reduced the arrears.

If Trebanos were winning the kick/chase exchanges it was Beddau definitely to the fore at scrum time and when a set piece delivered some go forward ball Carl Lewis and Hywel Chatham manufactured an opening which again saw Kieran Gay showing a clean pair of heels with Callum Wheeler again on hand to take the scoring pass. Chatham was unable to add the conversion.

Despite the obvious threat lurking in Beddau`s backs it was still Trebanos asking most of the questions with the ball flickering along the line as offload on offload was gathered by fleet-footed backs. It was then somewhat against the grain when The Crows had a try on the board thanks almost entirely to the forwards. Number 8 Bradley Heale carried and the support of hooker Rhys Thomas took it into the Beddau 22. A concerted drive was ended with loosehead Chris Forshaw burrowing over to take the half-time score to 12-8.

Some doubters among the Beddau faithful weren`t convinced that the lead could be held and it was only the strength of the defence which held Trebanos out initially. Confidence was growing and when Trebanos offended at the tackle Hywel Chatham landed a fine penalty to extend the lead. A long clearance from within the 22 went to touch on the full and as the initial pass was from the base of a scrum just the wrong side of the line Trebanos had a lineout in an advantageous position. They made it pay with a rolling drive that culminated in a try for lock Iwan Davies with the conversion attempt grazing the upright. Referee Mr Spurrier, a very good official, then ruled that a Beddau tackle was high. Matthew Edwards, though, saw the kick that would have given his side the lead drift wide.

Beddau, well-marshalled by the calm Lewis Egal, kept the door closed against a wave of attacks and then it became the turn of the forwards to exert some pressure and when Beddau sprang quickly away from a breakdown the ball reached Cody Baker who unfortunately saw it slip from his grasp in reaching for the line. The pack, however, spared his blushes by striking the scrum ball against the head and Number 8 Jack Perkins picked up and raced through a blindside gap for a great score. Hywel Chatham, from the touchline, added icing to the cake.

Trebanos will justly feel that their performance perhaps deserved more but Beddau`s hard work was equally deserving of an overdue reward.
