Saturday Round Up - October 12

The 1st XV continued their impressive start to the campaign with another win whilst the Youth went down to a strong Merthyr outfit in our senior games over the weekend.

In an emotional afternoon at Mount Pleasant Park, the 1st XV put on a determined display to beat a strong Aberdare outfit 38-14.

The Green and Golds were really locked in an arm wrestle for 40 minutes with the visiting Snakes taking the lead after twenty minutes with a long kick and chase from their speedy winger.

Aberdare’s defence was resolute until Beddau finally got over the whitewash just three minutes before the interval with a try from player of the match Dylan Williams which was converted by Callaghan Smith.

With the score 7-7 at the break it looked like the game could go anyway but it was Beddau who came flying out of the blocks in the second period and they went on to score a further five tries. Ethan Coombes crossed for a brace of tries, whilst James Davies, Cameron Ellis also got on the scoresheet to go with the impressive Dylan Williams’ second score of the game. Scrum half Callaghan Smith kicked three further second half conversions.

Aberdare really kept asking questions of Beddau until the end and scored a second try late into the game.

The second half performance in particular would have brought a big smile to the face of Tommy Lewis who the club paid tribute to throughout the day.

It was a fifth consecutive win for the Green and golds this Championship campaign against opposition who will no doubt cause many teams problems during the season.

Next up is another tough league game on Saturday away at Brynmawr.

The Youth put on a battling display against a very good Merthyr outfit in a Cardiff Rugby Premiership game at Yorkdale but couldn’t prevent the visitors from taking a bonus point 28-0 win.

The score line doesn’t reflect the efforts the young side put in and they will certainly be up for putting things right in preparation for the visit of Cowbridge next weekend.

The Chuckles fixture at Deri was postponed due to a shortage of referees but they can look forward to returning to league action this Friday with Pencoed the visitors.

It will also be the first appearance of the 3rd XV (Allstars) next Saturday as they make the trip to Machen for a friendly fixture.
