There was an arm wrestle at Mount Pleasant Park where the 1st XV overcome a powerful Rumney outfit whilst the Chuckles enjoyed a good win at Cardiff Met in a friendly fixture.
The 1st XV won a tight and nailbiting early season top of the table clash at Mount Pleasant Park. Cody Baker was again on form with the boot kicking three first half penalties to give the Green and Golds a 9-0 interval lead.
Beddau's defence had stood firm in the opening half despite some onslaughts from the visitors but all the good work came to a quick end early in the second period when both Morgan Williams and Reeagon Mahoney broke away for Rumney scores, one of which was converted by Jake Hillman.
Lots of teams would have been blown away by the two quick opposition tries but credit must go to Beddau's determination and they soon wrestled back the lead after a big tackle by man of the match Cai Herdman saw the ball being turned over and livewire flanker Sam Gibson grabbing the ball to dive over for Baker to add the extras.
At this point there was still plenty to play for and both teams attacked eached other until the final whistle but there was no further scores as Beddau held on to record a 16-12 success.
This game proved to be a very tough, physical encounter. Beddau will have been happy with their first half defensive play in particular but will have been dissapointed not to have finished off some good flowing rugby on times.
Next up is a visit to St Peters next weekend.
The Chuckles had almost twenty boys not available this weekend but still managed to put a strong and competitive outfit together to travel to Cyncoed to play Cardiff Met. The youngsters on show really gave a good account for themselves with 18 year old Scott Bishop leading the way with a try hatrick. Fellow 18 year olds Cian Evans and Harri Jones also scored good individual tries. There were also fine tries for outstanding skipper for the day Ieaun Williams and Jamie Kendall.
Dan Rees who also had an excellent afternoon in the centre slotted three conversions whilst Shaun Bennett and Luke Davies were also succesful with a two pointer each.
This was another good win for the Chuckles against quality opposition who had the luxury of changing almost their whole team at the interval giving freshers an opportunity to impress.
The performances of the boys really gives the coaching team some headaches before their first WRU Conference home game of the season against Bedwas on Saturday.
The Youth XV's scheduled league game at Fairwater was postponed at the request of the hosts but they will hopefully finally get back on the paddock next Saturday at Old Penarthians in a Cardiff Rugby Premiership.
