No Joy For Green & Gold As Quins Ease Through To Next Round

Beddau failed to take the lead in Round 2 of the Specsavers WRU Cup when Hywel Chatham sent a penalty effort wide.  They had, however, been keeping Quins pinned down.  On their first visit to Beddau territory, though, the Premiership outfit struck.  From a lineout outside the 22 a massive drive developed and after about 30 metres hooker Torin Myhill was at the bottom of the pile to claim the try which Jack Wilson converted.

A solid scrum gave Hywel Chatham a brief glimpse of space and his quick pass put Callum Wheeler into the gap.  A delightful step sent him clear but a chasing back just made the try-saving tackle.  With Beddau in full attendance at the breakdown Quins were offside and were again in defending the tap and go.  Hywel Chatham this time took the points.

A pass behind a scrum slipped through Beddau fingers and visiting scrum half Gareth Rees fly-hacked and won the race.  Sam Edwards got back to make the tackle but was pinged for not releasing giving Jack Wilson a simple three points.

With Quins driving following a lineout a penalty was awarded.  Any thoughts that Richard Bloomfield had been found guilty of re-attaching to the maul were dashed though as the award was against Beddau.  The lineout provided the basis for another controlled drive with Richard Bloomfield this time reaching the line to give Quins a 15-3 lead at half-time.

A missed pass in Beddau`s defence was gobbled up by the eager Quins backs and a nudge to the corner was fielded by Morgan Griffiths who just squeezed in at the flag.  The same player was on the mark again, this time taking a rapid pass from centre Josh Batcup whose break had made the chance.  Jack Wilson converted to make it 27-3.  If this scoreline was a slightly distorted judgement on Beddau`s efforts a last minute try had elements of farce.  A pass from the base of a scrum was fumbled; a follow-up player was also not able to gather it in yet full-back Leon Randell was able to stroll through a static defence under the gaze of referee Carwyn Williams who had evidently not seen anything untoward with any of the handling errors.  Jack Wilson concluded matters with a fine conversion.

Sometimes the performance can mean more than the result.  On that basis Beddau will have taken much from this game.  Quins are a top-half Premiership side but were never able to establish any authority.  Their ability to finish what they had started marked them out and they completely earned the win but Beddau were certainly well in contention for the greater part of the proceedings.
