Second Half Onslaught Blows Otters Away

Beddau survived an early onslaught from Narberth and by the end had done much to earn the bonus point win.  An impressive piece of enterprise from the Otters produced an excellent score  Scrum half Rhys Lane floated a kick into space and Johnathan Rogers rose to take it and hand on to centre Jake Jenkins to run it in.  Nick Gale didn`t land the conversion but soon put Beddau in more trouble with a teasing kick that found touch in the corner.

The lineout became a scrum and the Otters drove strongly with Number 8 Roy Osborn scoring the try which Nick Gale converted.  Narberth again drove into the heart of the defence and lock Alex Jenkins took the pass from Osborn to be awarded the try.  Nick Gale made it 19-0 and was quickly on target again when referee Mr Gareth John made the difficult decision to send Beddau winger Brandon Clarke to the bin.  The offence was a high tackle and the penalty was clear but the fact that Jake Jenkins was already falling before contact was made may, in many eyes, have been sufficient mitigation to avoid the card.

From the restart Hywel Chatham was the victim of a high tackle, too and Mr John duly showed yellow to the Narberth offender.  Again, the offence was borderline but the line had been drawn.  Who would be a referee?  Beddau went to touch and earned a close range penalty.  The tap and go developed a momentum and after a sniping run from Callum Wheeler the forwards took over with lock Rhys Owens scoring the try to make it 5-22.

A re-energised Beddau now took on Narberth upfront and a splendid pass from Tom Marley put the elusive Callum Wheeler into space for a fine try that Hywel Chatham converted.  Chatham then stepped a tackler in the 22 but had the ball stripped for the award of a penalty which the outside half goaled to make it 15-22 at the interval.

Hardly had the second half begun than a blistering break by Cody Baker allowed the winger to link with Hywel Chatham whose long pass picked out Callum Wheeler for the full back to run in his second try.  Chatham`s conversion levelled the scores at 22 all.

Carl Lewis had replaced the slightly battered Tom Marley and Josh Thomas too left to receive running repairs giving Sol Khan an opportunity in the back row, all his other appearances having been at hooker.  With Beddau continuing to make inroads up front Carl Lewis took on the back row.  Hywel Chatham sent it on its way and the looping Callum Wheeler was on hand to complete a try hattrick with Hywel Chatham again converting.

Mr John was then again called on to deal with a difficult decision.  Narberth had pinned Beddau into their 22 when Cody Baker led a counter.  A tip tackle saw Baker dropped to the ground with Mr John producing the red card.  The numbers didn`t work to Beddau`s advantage for long though.  Young Mason Morgan, on as a replacement was involved in an off-the-ball incident which saw him also receive red.

The game was still being played at a flat out tempo and after 7 months on the sidelines former captain Lewis Egal replaced the impressive Sam Edwards.  Brandon Clarke had been the focal point of an attack going left when the ball was swiftly moved the other way.  Lewis Egal finished strongly in the corner for Hywel Chatham to land a fine conversion.  A great tap-tackle from Cody Baker brought Narberth winger Josh Davies down just short of the try line and a certain bonus point and to rub salt in Cody Baker won the race to get a hand to Callum Wheeler`s rolling kick to take Beddau clear at 41-22.
