Mixed Fortunes For Green & Golds

There was mixed fortunes for our three senior teams yesterday. All games got the go ahead despite the heavy downpour and storms that have effected us over the last few days.

A much changed 1st XV traveled to Maesteg Harlequins and despite a good start to the game in which they seemed to control were beaten 35-22 by a determined side.

The hosts power at scrum time seemed to be a big factor in the game which lead them to a mass of penalties in which the excellent Owen Howe, who was playing on dual from the Premiership, slotted with ease.

Beddau played some good rugby on times which resulted in excellent scores for Rhys Owens and Cody Baker. Hywel Chatham added the extras. Beddau got better as the game got on but the home team had done the damage in the last twenty minutes of the first half and the first twenty minutes of the second period.

The game was played in good spirits but it was difficult for supporters to see a late tackle on full back Zac Byard go unpunished. Zac spent the evening at both the Royal Glamorgan and Princess of Wales Hospitals where it is deemed that he has a fractured eye socket and cheek bone.

The Green and Golds will look to get that elusive first win of the season next week at home to Trebanos when Ben Lee, Matthew Howells, Ben Jones, Glenn Slater, Sam Tiley, Luke Jones, Keiran Gay, Owen Cotton and James Davies should all be back and available for selection.

A good Rhys Lott solo try and a conversion and two penalties from full back Owen Cotter insured Beddau took the points with a 13-0 victory.

The 2nd XV though gave the Club something to cheer about as they took the spoils in the local derby against Llantrisant at Mount Pleasant Park. It wasn't a great spectacle in the poor weather but two teams showed plenty of passion and determination.

The Youth XV were pipped at the death at Gwernyfed in a fantastic game of rugby. Both teams tried to throw the ball about at every opportunity and it was great for both sets of supporters to see such a good game.

The hosts claimed the points with a near final play try and touchline conversion. There was controversy at the final whistle though as the young referee awarded Beddau a penalty only to blow up for full time and a final score of 26-24.

The young Green and Golds can again take plenty of positives forward from this game and look forward to their Welsh Cup game with Gilfach Goch next weekend.
