Weekend Preview

There is a big weekend of sporting action for our teams in the Club.

The 1st XV will be looking to bounce back from their first league defeat of the season when they welcome Skewen to Mount Pleasant Park on Saturday.

The Green and Golds suffered a narrow 16-13 home defeat to a good Narberth side last weekend and will be keen to get that out of their system against their West Walian opponents this weekend.

Skewen too, have had a good start to the season. They have won their home fixtures against Newcastle Emlyn (21-17) and Trebanos (34-20) but suffered an away day loss at Rhydyfelin (20-12). They currently stand in fifth place in the National Championship with nine points from their three games, which is a place and a point lower than Beddau.

The teams last met at Mount Pleasant back in March and it was Beddau who came out on top with a bonus point 30-16 victory. Dai Francis grabbed a brace of tries that afternoon, whilst there were also individual scores for Matthew Howells and Jordan Goodwin. Hywel Chatham also weighed in with two conversions and two penalties.

Beddau also recorded a 29-14 win away at Tennant Park last season but Saturday’s visitors have improved in recent months under the guidance of their head coach Kevin James the former Neath centre.

Kick-off is 2.30pm and match referee is Mr Adam Jones.

The 2nd XV are currently sitting pretty at the top of the Mid District Worthington League Division One after back to back bonus point league wins.

They will be hoping to make it a hat-trick of successes this Saturday as they make the trip to Senghenydd.

The Saints have just played one league tie this season and they were unlucky to lose out 26-22 at Mountain Ash on the opening day of the league. They have a young squad who can beat anybody on their Welfare ground patch so Beddau must be once again at the top of their game this weekend.

The last time the teams played was back in October 2016, when a strong Beddau outfit beat a depleted Senghenydd 45-7 in a friendly at Mount Pleasant Park.

Kick-off is also 2.30pm.

The Youth XV will have enjoyed a hugely encouraging win over Treorchy in the Yorkdale mud in their opening Blues B league game last week but they will now have to put that to the back of their minds as they face another tricky league tie.

Ynysybwl are the visitors again to Yorkdale and will also be full of confidence after taking the spoils in their big local derby with Rhydyfelin by 6-0 last Saturday.

There have been some big games between Beddau and Ynysybwl over the years and it’s great to see this fixture return after several seasons without any games.

Kick-off is 2.30pm.

MINI & JUNIOR RUGBY

Our mini and junior “Bulldogs” are once again in action over the weekend. Please, if you get time make every effort to support our young guns. They are a credit to their families, Club and Community and play the game in a fantastic spirit. They can be seen on the fields of Mount Pleasant and Yorkdale.

DARTS

Our Friday night “Bowcats” team will be hoping to keep their two-point lead at the top of the Pontyclun & District Summer Darts league or even extend it this weekend as they welcome Red Gate A to the Clubhouse.

Beddau continued their recent good run with a 6-1 away win over Thomastown Beerkats last Friday and would be over the moon to get a similar result against a tricky Red Gate side who currently occupy sixth spot in the table. The Tonyrefail based outfit have won five of their thirteen games this season.

The Bowcats did win the early season game at the Red Gate by 6-1 (14-3 legs) with Ian “Bompa” Phillips again in top form hitting a maximum.

The game starts at 8.15pm on Friday and any support will be more than welcome.

FOOTBALL

Cwm Welfare AFC continue their Highadmit South Wales Alliance Premier league programme this Saturday with a home game against Brecon Corries at Mount Pleasant Park (2.30pm).

Cwm have suffered two consecutive defeats which has seen them slip down the league table to eleventh which is a place lower than Saturday’s guests.

The Corries have won two and drawn one of their five opening games and have the same seven points as Cwm but sit a place higher because of a better goal difference.

One thing for sure with Cwm at the moment is that you can guarantee an exciting game and plenty of goals.

ENTERTAINMENT

The fantastic band “The Maddison’s” play live at the Clubhouse tomorrow (Friday) evening from 7.30pm in a fundraiser for a section of the mini and juniors. They are a fantastic group and tickets for the night can be purchased for £7.

Once again, all the top sport can be seen live in HD on the many big screens and large TV’s around the Clubhouse all weekend. There is plenty of Premiership football, Guinness, Aviva and Top 14 rugby plus the usual Horse Racing to be seen. There will always be a welcome for members and bonifide guests in a fun and friendly environment.

Have a great weekend.
