Weekend Preview

There is plenty of action for our teams over the coming weekend.

The 1st XV will play their final league game of the season as they make the trip down West to play Dunvant at their Broadacre ground for the first time in competitive rugby.

Dunvant may be bottom of the table and relegated back into Division One but have shown plenty of fight all season and have lost many of their games by fine margins particularly at home. They have won two league games this season, one against Newbridge 23-0 on the opening day of the season and a big 72-17 success over Cardiff Met back in October. Both those victories were at their nice Broadacre ground.

They did suffer a heavy loss at Narberth last weekend but will be keen to show their home supporters that there is continued fight in them this weekend.

Beddau won the corresponding fixture between the Clubs at Mount Pleasant back at the end of November by 33-16 thanks to tries from Robert Jones, Joe Casella, Tyler Wells, Callum Wheeler plus the award of a penalty try. Hywel Chatham kicked four of the five conversions.

Beddau too will be looking to bounce back after a 24-18 loss at home to Glynneath last Saturday. The Green and Golds were suffering with several injuries and player unavailability but that was no excuse for the young Green and Golds who were edged out by a battling Glynneath outfit. Despite the defeat Beddau moved up to third in the table above Tata Steel after claiming a losing bonus point. There is still an outside chance of finishing the season in a very good third spot but they will need to get something out of Saturday’s game if they are to do so.

Kick-off is 2.30pm and match referee is Wayne Davies (Llanelli)

The 2nd XV too are looking to show their bounce back ability this weekend as they welcome Aberdare to Mount Pleasant Park in another Rhondda & East Glamorgan DRU Division A fixture.

Tom Preece and Riaz Majhoti’s young chargers came off second best against a Bargoed outfit that contained several players with Premiership experience last weekend. But playing against the calibre of players that they did last weekend will only enhance their player development.

Aberdare jumped above Beddau and into fifth place last weekend. They have won three of their seven league games this season. They have recorded a double over Senghenydd (27-10 & 20-10) and also beat Mountain Ash (41-0). They gave league leaders Bargoed a good game a few weeks back and are full of confidence after a testing start to the season.

Kick-off is 2.30pm

MINI & JUNIOR RUGBY

Our mini and junior “Bulldogs” are once again in action this coming Sunday. These talented Children continue to impress and they are well worth watching if you get the opportunity to get out. They are a credit to the Club and Community.

DARTS

Our Friday night darts team remain just a point off the top of the Pontyclun & District Darts Winter league after an impressive 6-1 (12-4 legs) win over the Mounters last Friday with Ian “Bompa” Phillips hitting a maximum.

This Friday they will play their final home game of the season against third placed Coed Ely. The visitors are the only side to have eaten “Lenny’s Lions” this season as they took the spoils 4-3 (9-8 legs). Coed Ely are only eight points off the leaders Ogmore A and still have an outside chance of title glory.

Beddau still have a game in hand over their rivals but will want to get the points this Friday to revenge that defeat and emulate their guests from the title chase.

The game starts at 8.15pm and all support is welcome.

FOOTBALL

Cwm Welfare were dragged back into the bottom of three of the Welsh league division three last weekend after suffering a 3-2 reverse at home to Chepstow Town.

Cwm will be a little disappointed that they didn’t pick up at least a point after a battling performance with goals from Joshua Sweeney and Jon Alford.

This Friday they could jump out of the relegation places again if they can get three points away at Trethomas. The home team sit in mid-table after claiming ten wins and three draws from their first twenty four fixtures this season.

One of those wins came at Mount Pleasant Park back in December by 2-1.

ENTERTAINMENT

There is a fantastic fundraising night at the Clubhouse on Saturday as the Club hosts “Viva Las Beddau”. The Elvis tribute night sees top local stars Ponty Pressley and Darren Graceland Jones play live.

This is a fantastic evening and tickets can be purchased for £10.

This is strictly an over 18s evening and doors open at 7pm.

All the top European rugby and Premiership football can also be seen at the Clubhouse live in HD on the many big screens and large TV’S over the weekend.
The usual live bar entertainment continues on Sunday with a top local artist playing live in the bar from 5.30pm. It’s free admission and always a good night out.
