The new 3G pitch and athletics track at Bryncelynnog Comprehensive School is on course for completion for Spring of this year.

At a recent visit from Council leader Andrew Morgan and cabinet members for education and leisure Jay Rosser and Ann Crimmings they confirmed that good progress had been made despite the bad weather that contractors had recently battled.

Beddau RFC has played a key part in the outline development of this scheme and will benefit from this new facilitiy as will all the Community.

The Council continues to make good progress in constructing a brand new 3G sports pitch and running track in Beddau, which is on course for completion during Spring 2019.

A recent visit to the works site at Bryncelynnog Comprehensive School saw Leader of the Council, Councillor Andrew Morgan, and Cabinet Members with responsibility for Education and Leisure, Councillors Joy Rosser and Ann Crimmings (pictured), see for themselves the progress being made on the scheme.

The new 3G pitch for Beddau was announced in October 2018, alongside a new facility for Penywaun, and it will be available for school and community use. The facilities will represent the 12th and 13th ‘all-weather’ outdoor sport pitches delivered by the Council in recent years, across Rhondda Cynon Taf.

The new facility in Beddau will be fitted with a shock pad, making it suitable for rugby training as well as football, and will also include a full-size athletics track around its perimeter – comprising a six-lane 400m track and a 100m straight.

Despite recent inclement weather, good progress has been made on site and the facility is on course for completion in Spring 2019. To date, earthworks have been completed – while work to place the stone sub base and drainage laying has begun. The following stages of the project will be the installation of floodlighting bases and fencing, and laying the tarmac base.

Councillor Joy Rosser, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “It was great to visit the construction of the new 3G facility and athletics track for Bryncelynnog Comprehensive School, and see how the site is beginning to quickly transform. The new facility, once completed this Spring, will provide excellent opportunities for outdoor leisure for pupils in their Physical Education lessons.

“This project is one of a number to be delivered at our schools in recent times, with a new 3G pitch also being constructed at Ysgol Rhydwaun in Penywaun. This follows on from completed 3G schemes in Church Village, Tonyrefail, Pontyclun, Aberdare and, most recently, at Porth Community School and Ferndale Comprehensive as part of our 21st Century Schools investment.

“These facilities really are making a difference to our young people, and the Council is ensuring more and more pupils are receiving access to these improved outdoor leisure facilities. I’m looking forward to seeing the site at Bryncelynnog Comprehensive continue to transform in the coming weeks.”

Councillor Ann Crimmings, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Heritage Services, said: “This project in Beddau continues our ambitious effort to deliver a 3G sports pitch within a three-mile radius of every home in Rhondda Cynon Taf, with 11 delivered so far and another two under construction. The Council has also recently opened the first indoor 3G pitch in the County Borough at Rhondda Fach Sports Centre – which has received IRB accreditation for full-contact rugby and is the only facility of its kind in the whole of the Valleys.

“There are a number of advantages to 3G pitches in comparison to traditional grass surfaces. They do not deteriorate, can be played in all-weather and allow local clubs to continue their training and fixtures schedules through the winter. As we build more of these facilities, the Council is fulfilling its commitment made to local sports clubs to improve the outdoor Leisure offer.

“In October 2018, the brand new Ron Jones Stadium in Aberdare opened, which has provided £3m athletics facilities for the community. The project in Beddau will deliver a full-size athletics track, and the Council has committed to providing an upgrade to the current athletics track in Clydach Vale – which will represent investment in athletics for the Rhondda, Cynon and Taf areas.”
