Sensational Hopkins Try Sends Beddau Into Semi’s

Beddau booked their place in the semi-final of this year’s Worthington Mid District Cup after an incredible 20-17 win over high flying Ystrad Rhondda at Mount Pleasant Park.

A sensational length of the field try by speedy winger Gareth Hopkins in the final play won the game for the Green and Golds and sent the crowd crazy. Beddau also scored for two other eye catching tries. Callum Wheeler finished off an excellent run by James Davies and Tom Marley was on hand to score after a good break by fly half Hywel Chatham. The pivot was also on hand to kick a penalty and a conversion.

Huge credit also has to go to Ystrad Rhondda who on times showed why they are currently second in the National Championship and they also crossed for two good tries themselves.

After the final whistle Beddau team manager Jamie Willis praised the team saying “That was an incredible effort considering all the injuries and unavailability’s. The boys attitude was superb, they just wouldn’t give up. And what a try for Usain (Gareth Hopkins). That is one of the best individual scores you will ever see and that bit of magic alone deserved to win any game.

“Ystrad are a fantastic outfit and they deserve to be where they are in the table and to take that scalp is massive and hopefully will give us the belief now to kick on and look to avoid relegation this season.

“It was fantastic to see Mason Morgan stepping up from the youth, playing out of position and he was absolutely brilliant. Everybody put their bodies on the line and it was good to see the heart and desire in the jersey”.

Beddau will take their place in the draw for the semi-finals along with Gilfach Goch, Treorchy and the winner of this evenings clash between Mountain Ash and Bedlinog.
