Weekend Preview

There is plenty of big games involving our teams over the weekend.

The 1st XV face a tough trip to Margam to take on Tata Steel in match day five of the new WRU National Championship season.

Beddau may have been suffering an early season injury crisis but have picked up three very good wins. Coaches Ross Johnson and Tom Salter will be hoping to see the return of a couple of players though for Saturday’s fixture which is no doubt one of the toughest away days of the season.

Tata have a 50% record from their opening four games of the season which means they currently occupy fifth place in the table which is three places and three points lower than Beddau in the early season table.

They are unbeaten at home with two wins coming against Rhydyfelin (29-13) and Cardiff Met (27-22) but they have lost to Newbridge (27-24) and Newcastle Emlyn (24-19) on their travels.

The Port Talbot Club have been a thorn in the Green and Golds side for several seasons with Beddau struggling to pick up wins despite good performances. Last season the Steel men completed the double with a 29-15 home defeat and an opening day 22-6 loss in Margam where Beddau lead 6-5 thanks to two Hywel Chatham penalties late in the game only for a massive late onslaught from the home side to take all the spoils.

Kick-off is 2.30pm and match referee is Mr Elfyn Morris-Roberts.

The 2nd XV have reversed their away Mid District Worthington Division A league game with Ystrad Rhondda to Mount Pleasant Park.

The Green and Golds will be keen to bounce back from their first defeat of the season at Senghenydd last week when they welcome the Rhondda side.

A depleted Beddau team will have been disappointed with last week’s performance but will be looking to regain their top spot in the table this Saturday against a good Ystrad outfit.

Despite losing their opening two league games to Aberdare (40-17) and Ynysybwl (25-22) the visitors are always capable of beating anyone on their day as they proved when the teams last met at the Gelligallad ground last term in a friendly where Ystrad powered to a 22-3 friendly win.

Kick-off is 2pm and match referee is Mr Brian Patterson.

The Youth XV take a break from their Blues B league programme this weekend but will be hoping to keep up their excellent start to the season when they make the short trip to Gilfach Goch in a friendly encounter.

The young Green and Golds proudly sit top of the Blues B table after the opening two rounds of the season but they will be tested this Saturday by a good Gilfach outfit who currently play their trade in the Blues C Division. Our hosts have also played two league games this season, they defeated Llantrisant 40-7 but had their colours lowered last week at Llantwit Fardre.

Gilfach Goch have a strong reputation for producing good Youth teams and have had a successful few seasons so this will be a perfect test for Beddau before they return to league action at near neighbours Pontyclun next week.

Kick-off is 2.30pm and match referee is Mr Dave Phillips

MINI & JUNIOR RUGBY

Our mini and junior “Bulldogs” are once again in action this Sunday so don’t forget to pop along and give these youngsters the support they deserve. There are plenty of home games this Saturday on the fields of Mount Pleasant and Yorkdale. Good luck to all involved again, we hope you have a great and fun day.

DARTS

Our Friday night “Bowcats” darts team have a break from Pontyclun & District Summer league darts action but will be hoping that local neighbours Cwm Welfare will do them a big favour.

Cwm take on Ogmore B the team who are a place and two points behind them in the table at the Welfare and a win for the Beddau Club could hand advantage back to the Bowcats in what is turning out to be an exciting league.

Beddau return to league action next Friday with a home game against Whitehills B.

FOOTBALL

Cwm Welfare AFC also take a break from league action this weekend but face a tricky home W John Owen Cup 1st round tie against Tynte Rovers.

Tynte have had a very good start to the season having won five and drawn one of their opening nine Highadmit South Wales Alliance Division Two games which has seen them rise to third in the table and sit just a point below the leaders.

Cwm will be hoping to continue their good scoring spree but will be putting all stops out to prevent goals going back in the opposite direction as they have been in recent weeks.

Kick-off at Mount Pleasant Park is 2.30pm.
