Vital Win But Nothing Resolved In Relegation Battle

Games are running out and Beddau are stilled mired in a relegation struggle.

There were mixed feelings approaching the final home game of the season.  On the one hand it was a home fixture, on the other the opponents were Trebanos who had scored a comprehensive 43-15 win in the reverse fixture.

From the outset Beddau were looking to stamp some authority on the game but suffered an early set-back with the loss of full back Zac Byard who, on fielding a well-placed garryowen was trapped under the onrushing forwards and was unable to continue.  Owain Cotter replaced him.

There were two distinct periods where Trebanos gained some purchase in Beddau territory but that apart the half was dominated by Beddau with half backs David Francis and Hywel Chatham thriving behind some very good play up front.  Unfortunately, despite persistently knocking the Trebanos door there was a stern refusal to grant entry.  A gap opened for Hywel Chatham but in the blink of a hesitation it closed just as promptly and when a ball reached Adam Ashford the centre opted for a chip to the overlapping Owain Cotter but the bounce took the ball from his reach.

Trebanos had also thrown some energy into attack and it was difficult, when the half ended, to believe that forty minutes could have passed by with neither side scoring.

Trebanos opened the second period on the offensive.  Some long distance penalties were spurned in favour of the touchline but Beddau`s determined tacklers kept the visitors at bay until a lung-bursting run from scrum-half Francis turned the tide.  It was now Beddau on the front foot and when an advancing scrum drew an offside decision Hywel Chatham stroked the points.  A brief flash of emotions was settled by the very good young referee Jonathon Evans by the production of a yellow card to Beddau`s Lloyd Evans and the recently arrived Trebanos replacement David Davies.

It was not until the naughty step was vacated that any further score arrived.  From a lineout Beddau opened the play.  A good tackle halted things momentarily but with locks Lloyd Evans and Rhys Owen to the fore, Glenn Slater ensured Beddau`s good work was rewarded when feeding David Francis whose pace cut a gap and strength allowed him to ride a tackle in scoring a fine try.

Trebanos then threw everything into attack following a well-struck penalty by replacement Matthew Edwards.  More intense play from the visitors was meeting an uncompromising Beddau defence but Beddau showed plenty of enterprise too and a scything run from Tyler Wells led to a scrum in the 22.  A penalty ensued and Hywel Chatham opened the lead to 11-3 which was to prove beyond the best efforts of a spirited Trebanos.

This game was a credit to both sides and a good reason why rugby still draws supporters on Saturday afternoons.

Learning that Skewen had won too means that Beddau, to be certain of holding on to their place in the Championship need two further points.  They visit Newcastle Emlyn, with whom they have now drawn level at 41 points, next Saturday before finishing their campaign at bottom side Glynneath on 28 April.
