Pooler Extend Unbeaten Run In March To Title

Undefeated Pooler go marching on, and deservedly so even if this scoreline flatters.  Early on Beddau outside half Hywel Chatham spotted a gap and raced through and with support runners arriving a try was certainly on until Chatham`s fateful decision to chip over the defence.  It was picked off and Pontypool cleared their lines.

Heartened by this, though Beddau kept pressing but another kick over a winning scrum saw the ball again find Pontypool hands and a spiralling kick to the corner saw the visitors in Beddau territory for the first time.  Joe Casella prevented the touch and passed to Zac Byard but the young full back had his kick charged down.  A crazy bounce took it away from Dai Francis and Pooler winger Owen Williams managed to deflect it into the path of Joel Mahoney for a slightly fortuitous try that Kieron Meek converted.

A pretty mean late tackle on Hywel Chatham gave Beddau a close range penalty where the ball alighted.  The lineout was won but Beddau, though progressing through the maul opted to give the ball some air.  Owen Williams intercepted and went the length of the field for another converted try with Meek again doing the honours.

As if not enough presents had been placed at the foot of the tree Mr Andy Davies decided a maul had been brought to a halt illegally.  Beddau loose head Ben Stephens went to the bin and Mr Davies under the posts for a further 7 pointer.

It was 21-0 at half-time but Pontypool were quickly back on the scoreboard when a drive up front resulted in Kieron Meek finding Owen Williams who dived in.  The try went unconverted.

Beddau were not dispirited and for long periods kept Pooler on the back foot.  The defence was proving impenetrable and passes became more reckless until Number 8 Jordan Williams intercepted at halfway and galloped clear.  That try too was not improved.

With Beddau still attempting to prise something from the game Pontypool`s replacement hooker Lewis Ball, like a rabbit in the headlights, had made no attempt to retreat from an offside position and proceeded to deliberately knock on.  Which offence earned the yellow card that Mr Davies produced?

A brilliant break down the right by Dai Francis should have been rewarded.  The scrum half spotted the speedy Marcus Jones in a good position but the pass drifted away.  Pontypool found a good touch from a penalty and after much huffing and puffing prop Ryan Harford got a hand to the ball and Matthew Jones on as a replacement landed a fine conversion.

Pontypool will be pleased to continue their flawless record as they prepare to face Merthyr in the next round of the Welsh Cup while Beddau, in ruing another defeat where carelessness played a part are girding their loins for Wednesday`s encounter with Bedwas in the same competition.
